One of the greatest joy and desire that a good Muslim do crave for is to dream of the Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Dreaming of the Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ isn't impossible as it has been established in a sound and authentic Hadith narrated by Abu Hurairah (R.A):

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "He who sees me in his dream will see me in his wakefulness (or he (PBUH) may have said it is as though he has seen me in a state of wakefulness), for Satan does not appear in my form.'' Riyādu'Soliheen Hadith 840.

It is crystal clear that Allah swt can make anyone who He loves, to see the lightening face of the Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in his/her dream, which can, fortunately, result to seeing him ﷺ in reality (wakeful state). Both (dream and reality) has been confirmed to be a possibility by some of the pious predecessors and the great scholars who were blessed to see Rasūlullah ﷺ in their dreams.

Although, some scholars classified and restricted the dream to those who have seen the Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ before, during his lifetime or those who have met with him, but, there is no clear evidence to this restriction, rather, it is only an assumption or their limited opportunity (disability) to see him in their dreams, therefore, they thought it is impossible.
They also explained that what the Holy Prophet  ﷺ meant in that hadith is seeing him on the day of Judgement. Then, we ask, won't we all see him on the last day?
Abū Hurairah also narrated an Hadith which says that:

"The Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: "The people most loved by me from amongst my Ummah would be those who would come after me but everyone amongst them would have the keenest desire to catch a glimpse of me (in his dream) even at the cost of his family and wealth."" Muslim Book 54, Hadith 7323.
Amongst are other similar Hadith. You need to ask yourself, are you among those who have the keenest desire to catch a glimpse of Rasūlullah ﷺ in your dream? If yes, Congratulations, may your dreams come true. If No, now is the best time for you to be part of us.

The likes of Imam Shāfihi R.A, Imam Ahmad bn Hanbal, Abu-l-Hasan Al-Ash'ari, At-tabarī, Imam Ali Ridoh, Ma'rūf Alkarahy, Abu-l-Hasan An-Naysābūry and some other pious predecessors were granted such opportunity to see him ﷺ in their dreams. Many Hadith scholars also affirmed that he can be seen in his form as Shaytān has no authority and power to take his form.

Infact, it is obligatory for every Muslim to yearn for seeing Rasūlullah ﷺ in their dreams before departing this world. What a great thing to long for!. It may seem to be impossible when you believe it is but didn't the Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself say that:

"A man shall be with whom ever he loves, and you shall be with whomever you love." Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2385.

Is it possible to see the Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in one's dream?

Yes, it is. This can be taken from the Initially stated Ahadith.

What must I do to see him ﷺ?

The scholars, who believed that one can see him ﷺ in one's dream, recommend that one should have the following to make such a dream a possibility:

  • Profound Love:
This the first and foremost for everyone who desires to see Rasūlullah ﷺ in his/her dream. It is the key to being with him in the hereafter. Loving him and his entire household must be a priority over every one, not even one's parents, or children.
It was narrated from Qatadah that: He heard Anas say: "The Messenger of Allah [SAW] said: 'None of you has believed until I am dearer to him than his son, his father and all the people.'" Sunan an-Nasa'i 5013
His love is the key to being with him.

  •  Abiding by Qur'an and Sunnah:
The Love of Rasūlullah ﷺ will bring about total submission to the command of Allah and sticking firmly to the Sunnah of the Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. A lover submissively follows the beloved. Qur'an 3:31 says:

"Say, ‘If you love Allah, follow me, and Allah will love you and forgive you your sins."

  • Sending Salawāt and Making Madhu'Rasūl (Eulogy):
It is recommended to send Salawāt as many as possible, limitlessly, upon the Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, not occasionally but persistently. This, undoubtedly, generates in one's heart, the love of the Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. It also mounts and elevates one quickly to a very high status, among all creations , also in the sight of Allah and His Messenger.

Allah and His angels send blessings on the Prophet: O ye that believe! Send ye blessings on him, and salute him with all respect. Q33:56.

How do you send Salawāt upon Prophet Muhammad ﷺ?

Abu Muhammad Ka`b bin `Ujrah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (PBUH) came to us and we asked him, "O Messenger of Allah, we already know how to greet you (i.e., say As-salamu `alaikum), but how should we supplicate for you?'' He (PBUH) said, "Say: `Allahumma salli `ala Muhammadin, wa `ala `ali Muhammadin, kama sallaita `ala `ali Ibrahima, innaka Hamidum Majid. Allahumma barik `ala Muhammadin, wa `ala `ali Muhammadin, kama barakta `ala `ali Ibrahima, innaka Hamidum Majid. Riyādu'Solihīn Hadith 1405.

Meaning :
[O Allah, exalt the mention of Muhammad ﷺ and the family of Muhammad ﷺ as you sent blessings upon the family of Ibrahim. You are Praised and Glorious. O Allah, bless Muhammad ﷺ and the family of Muhammad ﷺ as You blessed the family of Ibrahim. You are Praised and Glorious.'''

This Salāt is named "Salātul Ibrahimiyyah". Apart from this, there are many other Salawāt, which were gathered from some of the pious predecessors, in form of Duā upon Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. They are all acceptable to do, as long as they possess no meaning which are against the Qur'an and Sunnah.

Eulogizing him ﷺ is also a very good act, which is commended by Islam. Many scholars have been granted the sight of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ through this. It is an act of remembrance which creates a picture of the beloved in one's heart as if he was with someone, makes the heart burn for the eulogized and yearn for him. Once this closeness has been established, then, the task becomes easy.

  • Understanding his exceptional and perfect features:
The Features Of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ makes it very easy to understand who he is.
Many ask, how do you identify him?
This question has been answered by the scholars, several times.
Firstly, the serenity and certainty will be established in you when you see him, you become calm and assured of whom you have been made to see.

Also, you must know that no creation of Allah will ever say to you in your dream that, 'I am Prophet Muhammad ﷺ', or 'this is Prophet Muhammad ﷺ' except him, and even if you were told by someone in your dream that "that is Prophet Muhammad ﷺ sitting there...." or so?, you should know that he is definitely the one who was indicated, because, Shaytān can never take his form.

To erase all doubts, the characteristics, manners, features of the Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ must be known by you and me, to certainly be aware of whom we dream of.

May Almighty Allah grant us the opportunity of seeing him in our dream, in this life and hereafter. May his love be the remembrance of our heart and becomes a light that guides us in all our affairs. Aameen.
