Today, we will explain the meaning of "Muhammad". The reason for starting with Ahmad was because it was known first before the latter, according to Qur'an 61:6.
"Muhammad" is an Arabic name which has its root from 4 letters (Quadriliteral - according to Arabic Morphology) but literally, 3 letters : H,M and D (Hā, Mīm and Dāl - it means "to praise"). It shares the same root with names like Mahmūd, Ahmad, Hāmid and Hāmīd. 'Muhammad' means 'The Highly Praised'.
According to the Islamic Historians, the name wasn't popular among the Arabs until the birth of The Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. This was among the greatest signs of his prophethood, his glad tidings and his greatness. Such was also the case of Prophet Yahya (A.S), the son of Prophet Zachariah (A.S), whose name had not been given to anyone before him (...We have not assigned this name to anyone before him). Q19:7.
Although, some Jews also designated this name, Muhammad, to their sons having heard about the prophecy of a coming prophet with this beautiful name, in expectation that they might be lucky to have this Prophet among their children but Allah swt is The Most Knowing of where he places His message. Many were named but only few made it till the birth of Rasūlullah ﷺ.
Why was he Named "Muhammad"?
This name was give to our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ by His grandfather, Abdul Muttalib. He named him by this because of a dream he once had. He was asked by the people of Quraysh, "Why have you named him this?", He responded that " I had a strange dream of a long silver chain. One end of the chain was up in the sky, and the other was on the earth. Suddenly, the silver chain turned into a tree with leaves, on each leave was a light which brighten the whole city. I asked for the interpretation and I was told that I will have a special grandson who will be followed by everyone from every part of the world. So, I named him "Muhammad", so that he may be praised by Allah in heaven and praised by everyone on Earth".
Of all names, this name has its complete meaning, reflection and beauty on our Master, Muhammad ﷺ, to the extent that he was praised by Allah, His Angels , the Messengers before him, the Jinns, Mankind, the living and the non-living, the seen and the unseen, likewise the known and the unknown.
May the complete and ever-pouring blessings of Allah swt be upon the Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his entire household.
