All thanks to Allah, the Merciful. May His Everlasting blessings be upon the Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his entire household, as well all of his companions. Aameen.

The importance and the significances of good and meaningful names have been explained and emphasized in the previous articles. In this article, we'll list out some commonly mispronunced names and their meanings which may strongly affect or have an influence upon the bearer when accepted.

It was discovered by some scholars that, at times, our lives get affected and afflicted with things we take lightly, things that mostly determine our success or otherwise in life and hereafter, which then go on to cause happiness or lack of comfort for the coming generation, yet, we still take these things like a hill of beans.

One of the determinants of man's greatness in life is his name because it carries a very large portion and plays a vital role in whom he is today, and whom he'll likely be, tomorrow. Without having a prior knowledge about someone, the meaning of their names gives us a little insight and perception about them.
Seyyidinā Ali R.A once said that:
"Knowledge is sufficient to be an honor, that someone who doesn't have it claims to have it. And, ignorance is also enough to be a disgrace, that a person who is ignorant disproves to be ignorant".

No one loves to be called or tagged 'ignorant', even though they are, because knowledge and everything which is similar to it beautifies us. Both ignorance and knowledge are labels (names) for those who possess them.

Some names are beautiful in pronunciation and also have good meanings, but, unfortunately, they are pronounced wrongly. As long as these wrong pronunciations are accepted by the bearer, these names may highly affect the bearers' lives negatively.

A scholar once asked a student, "what's your name?" The student replied,"iz'hāq" (instead of Is'hāq), the scholar shouted "how can you be iz'hāq? You need to leave here right now?".
Iz'hāq means burning or destroying something, especially a false object or idea; while Is'hāq is the name of one of the Prophets of Allah, the first son of Prophet Ibrahim A.S.

Thus, every individual must know the right pronunciation of their names and their meanings.

Firstly, we'll need to establish the fact that names have either positive or negative impact on one's life with an incident which occured during the lifetime of The Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ:
Sa`id Ibnul-Musayyib narrated that his grandfather, Hazn, came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), the Prophet said to him: "What is your name?". He said, “Hazn” (Hard or Rough). The Prophet said,“You are Sahl ( Soft or Easy), ”The man said, “I do not want to change the name that my father gave me.” His grandson Sa`id used to say that they kept on experiencing the hardness (from their father's name) in their family.
 ( Al-Bukhārī)
With this we are good to bring a list we have compiled, that contains some names which are wrongly pronounced with their meanings, and the right way they need to be pronounced, including their meanings. Some meanings might be funny, yes, that's because that is what they mean while some are meaningless.

This list will be updated from time to time, so, subscribe to our Newsletter to get notified when the list is updated.

The list is written in the following format:
  • Correct name (its writing in Arabic and English) and the meaning.
  • Wrong pronunciation and it's meaning.
